In a very interesting article for Vanity Fair, journalist David Rose discusses many of the issues surrounding the Guantanamo Bay prisoners. These include the increasing signs of depression in a growing prison population. Concerned with a high number of attempted suicides, the US Army decided to reduce the rate by re-classifying attempted suicides as "manipulative self-injurious behavior," or S.I.B. There have been 40 SIB's in the last six months.
The article also discusses the low quality of the "intelligence" gathered at Guantanamo, the lack of importance of its prisoners (many of whom were arrested and imprisoned by mistake) and the lack of qualifications of the interrogators.
The article also talks about the legal issues surrounding the imprisonment of these people and the military commissions that are being set up to "try" them.
