  IRAQ

US policy on Iraq has been defined by different and sometimes obscure aims. Some of those proposed include a desire for control over Iraqi oil and an excuse to divert funds into companies with strong ties with the Bush administration. More ominously, the war with Iraq may be seen as a formal attack on the authority of the UN and the system of international law.

With the documents and links we offer here, we hope to throw some light onto these issues. Please e-mail us with other useful documents and links.

    State of Exception

The Bush administration appears to be following the model set out by Nazi political philosopher Carl Schmitt of setting out a national emergency (the blurry fear of terrorist attacks) that is addressed by the progressive elimination of civil liberties, under the principle of "estate of exception" or Ausnahmezustand. Its ultimate aim is the destruction of the liberal political system, including democratic institutions.
